The Beach of Lido of Venice

Twelve kilometres of fine, golden sand!

An island twelve kilometres long characterised by gently sloping beaches of fine, golden sand; crystal water, immaculate, well-equipped bathing establishments with the traditional numbered changing cabins. This is Lido of Venice, a place of fascination and elegance which was transformed in the mid 19th Century into one of the most beautiful Italian summer holiday resorts. It is the least busy bathing resort on the upper Adriatic. In the past it was favoured by the European nobility but it is the ideal holiday destination for anyone wanting to combine art tourism with a relaxing holiday by the sea.

Since 1857, the year in which the first "grand bathing station erected on the living waves of the sea" was built, the number of visitors has grown so great as to merit Lido the appellation "The Golden Island". Tourism d'elite came to Lido on account of the construction of grand, luxurious hotels, its elegant Liberty-style buildings with their fascinating air of decadence, not to mention the tree-lined avenues, the parks and the gardens. Due to its atmosphere of refined tranquillity, the island was home to numerous poets, musicians and writers, among them Thomas Mann who set his famous novel "A Death in Venice" in one of the most prestigious hotels.

In the present day, the very well equipped tourism infrastructure guarantees the visitor holidays characterised by comfort and tranquillity. Anyone keen to discover the less developed part of Lido, has only to go as far as Malamocco, a few kilometres from the centre, one of the most important localities in the Venice Lagoon and the seat of the Doge between 742 and 811.

Coming, finally to cultural festivals, the most important is in September, when Lido relives the elegant and mondane atmosphere of its past with the Biennale International Film Festival, the oldest festival of cinematography in the World.
