Venice, centred at the heart of its Lagoon, on the Adriatic sea, spreads over a vast metropolitan area (457 km2) which can be divided into the following eight zones:
The ancient city in the Lagoon has about 70,000 residents, the islands roughly 32,000 and the populations of the mainland districts total 175,000.
Business activity on the mainland consists almost exclusively of the service industries, such as public administration, and those connected more or less directly to tourism, by far the most important in terms of value, including commerce and craftsmanship, (circa nine and a half million visitors a year).
